Lower Division Requirements

BA - Child and Adolescent Development

Community College students should meet with a counselor as soon as possible to determine the equivalent courses offered at that institution. Students should complete as many as possible of the lower division requirements listed below, prior to transfer.

There are two main program options.

Plan A:

This program is a diversified major that also includes a program of subject matter preparation for prospective multiple subjects teachers. Plan A prepares students for a multiple subject credential program and for the California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET). Course and GPA requirements are subject to change. Plan B:

This program provides a strong foundation in child and adolescent development and could be the basis for a variety of careers that involve work with or about children. Plan B is also appropriate for students intending to do graduate study in child development and related fields.

Additional requirements:

Plans A and B require the transfer student to complete all of Areas A, B, C, D, and E of the General Education pattern as approved within CSU Executive Order 595 and currently listed on your campus General Education plan/certificate. At minimum the transfer student must complete the equivalents to the following courses:

A "C" or better is required in English 1B (a "C-" is not acceptable).

Physical Education requirement:

Two (2) semester or (4) quarter units required, even if exempted from the graduation requirement - must include at least 2 (two) different activities. Completion of these units will clear the graduation requirement.


Additional Graduation Requirements

Lower Division General Education (39 semester or 58 quarter units) - some of the courses listed above may be approved for general education credit as well as major preparation at your institution. Please see your college counselor/advisor to review your general education in order to receive FULL OR PARTIAL CERTIFICATION PRIOR TO TRANSFER to San José State University. You may be required to take additional lower division general education courses if you do not provide SJSU WITH A FULL OR PARTIAL CERTIFICATION OF GENERAL EDUCATION upon transfer.

American Institutions Requirement (3-9 semester or 5-15 quarter units) - may be satisfied within the lower division general education requirements.

Physical Education Requirement (2 courses) - at least 2 different activities.
