SJSU CatalogCollege of Applied Sciences and ArtsThe College of Applied Sciences and Arts provides both liberal and well-defined professional education at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Course work prepares students to be competent professionals in a technologically complex and culturally diverse society. The college's courses and programs provide students with a theoretical base developed and tested through research, knowledge that can be applied in diverse systems, processes that incorporate human understanding and cooperation, and supervised practice through internships, field work and/or preceptorships in a variety of career-related settings. Graduates become leaders and establish professional careers as administrators, educators, practitioners and applied researchers in a variety of settings. These settings include both private and public agencies, government institutions at all levels, community and health care organizations and educational institutions. The college's academic programs meet high standards set by national and state accrediting bodies such as the National Council on Accreditation for Teacher Education (NCATE), the National Athletic Training Association (NATA), Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (CEJMC), Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN), American Dietetic Association (ADA), Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), American Library Association (ALA), Council on Social Work Education and the Council on Accreditation of the National Recreation and Park Association, American Association for Leisure and Recreation. InternshipsThe departments/schools within the College offers internships that involve advanced practical experience, fieldwork or clinical experience in a professional work setting under direct supervision of qualified professionals. Interns would be assigned various duties and experiences related to their particular areas of specialization. Internships may include seminars, practica or preceptorships to further develop beginning and advanced level practice skills Administration of Justice BureauThe bureau, established in 1970, is operated as a unit in the College of Applied Sciences and Arts, San José State University. The purpose of the bureau is to facilitate the study of the criminal justice system, disseminate research findings and enhance professional development of personnel employed within the system through public service programs. Special Center and InstituteThe Center for Human Services Development within the School of Social Work has served as the community service unit for short-term training in the broad area of human services. The predominant activity has been specialized child welfare staff training contracted by various county Departments of Social Services in the northern California area. Resources for research on the changing conditions of the Mexican American population in the area are being explored. The Institute for Metropolitan Studies addresses urban problems by facilitating the exchange of knowledge, expertise and general spirit of cooperation between San José State University and its surrounding metropolitan community. The major purpose of the Institute is to make available the expertise of the university to community groups, nonprofit organizations, private sector representatives and public agencies to resolve urban problems, to provide student internships in urban-related problems, and to conduct studies focusing on a variety of urban and regional issues including housing, land use, neighborhood quality, economic development, transportation and urban design. The Center for International Sport and Human PerformanceThe center’s unique role is to promote and facilitate cross-national and cross-cultural interaction of individuals and their ideas in the context of sport and human performance. The center seeks to provide culturally enriching experiences to faculty and students, as well as the community, by promoting human performance activities that would not otherwise be available. |
