Earth Science

Sponsored by the Department of Geology, the curriculum in Earth Science includes courses with emphasis in environmental geology applications. Its broader earth science emphasis provides interdisciplinary science background and flexibility in electives allows for varied emphases while maintaining science rigor. Graduates are employed as environmental technicians in engineering, hazardous materials, regulatory, or ecological firms, computer mapping firms, and in local and regional planning and other government agencies.

The teacher preparation curriculum in Earth Science is designed for students planning to apply to a single subject credential program to become a secondary school teacher.

BS - Earth Science

This major provides broad background in the earth sciences. Students interested in teaching science in high school or middle school should take the specified elective courses (consult with the advisor as needed).

Chemistry sequence must be complete for transfers.

PHYS 002A Fundamentals of Physics

Teacher candidates should take the following:
BIOL 001 Plant Biology
AND
BIOL 002 Animal Biology

BIOL 020 Ecological Biology

BIOL 021 Human Biology

All students must satisfy the following prerequisite (or equivalent) prior to registering for the WST and 100W courses at SJSU {Academic Senate policy S05-8}:

ENGL 001B Composition 2
A "C" or better is required in English 1B (a "C-" is not acceptable).
or
Second Semester English Composition Equivalent Course
A course articulated to SJSU's English 1B is recommended, however any course approved for the IGETC second semester composition area would be accepted to meet this requirement (a grade of "C" or better is required).
