Biological Science

The following concentrations under the BS in Biological Science are included: Conservation and Organismal Biology, Marine Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Systems Physiology.

The BA in Biological Science is a broad, general biology program. With the right choice of options and electives, it may form the basis for graduate studies in biology or meet the entrance requirements for medical, dental or other professional schools. Students may also prepare for careers in drug marketing and management, for certain careers in agricultural or food technology, or for technical writing. The general degree usually requires less hands-on laboratory work than the BS concentrations.

The BA in Biological Science (Preparation for Teaching) prepares the student for a Science: Biology Single Subject Credential to teach general and life sciences (biology) in grades 7-12.

Conservation and Organismal Biology

The concentration in Conservation Biology equips students for employment or for advanced studies in the conservation and management of biodiversity. Employment opportunities may include wildlife and fisheries management, and conservation of threatened and endangered species, usually in public agencies such as the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, the Forest Service, and the California Department of Fish and Game. Private opportunities include environmental consultation, and science journalism. The concentration requires a formal emphasis in either Botany, Conservation Biology, Entomology or Zoology.

Marine Biology

The curriculum in marine biology will equip the student for a professional career in fishery biology, research in oceanography, aquaculture, and federal and state employment. Many students who complete the BS degree in Biological Science with a concentration in Marine Biology proceed to graduate studies in Marine Sciences at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories or major research laboratories and marine stations.

Microbiology

Within this concentration, students prepare for research careers in the biomedical sciences, and for positions in biotechnology or as clinical laboratory scientists (medical technologists) in hospitals. Advanced coursework is available in food microbiology, environmental microbiology, immunology, virology, hematology, medical microbiology, clinical laboratory science, and biotechnology. Graduates sometimes elect to enter medical or veterinary schools, or pursue other professional careers in the health sciences. A minor in Chemistry is included in the major.

Molecular Biology

The concentration in Molecular Biology prepares students for professional work in biotechnology, cell biology, genetic engineering, molecular and medical genetics and cellular physiology. A minor in Chemistry is included in the major.

Systems Physiology

The concentration in Systems Physiology prepares students to enter professions in which it is necessary to explore the chemical and physical mechanisms and interactions of organ systems. It is the concentration of choice among many of our students planning to apply to medical schools. These professions include medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacology, neurophysiology and toxicology. Students with this degree would be qualified research laboratory technicians or would qualify for advanced-degree studies. A minor in Chemistry is included in the major.
