Faculties from the five science departments advise students interested in teaching science in elementary, middle or high schools. The science majors designed to prepare prospective teachers are Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Meteorology, Earth Science and Physics.
Science educators from the college teach science and mathematics instructional methods courses and supervise secondary science and mathematics student teachers in local schools. The Science Education Resource Center provides teaching candidates with instructional materials.
The College of Science faculty direct a number of teacher enhancement programs for K-12 science and mathematics teachers, several supported by the National Science Foundation. The largest, Mathematics and Science Teacher Education Program (MASTEP), is designed to increase the number of new science and mathematics and offer programs to improve the background of science and mathematics teachers.
The department of Mathematics offers the MA in Mathematics with an emphasis on secondary education.
The MA in Natural Science is designed for science teachers. Theses and projects may focus on curricula and teaching materials. Courses are offered late in the day to accommodate part-time graduate students.
