SJSU AdmissionCollege of ScienceThe academic programs of the College of Science serve four academic missions. First, our bachelor's and master's-level degree programs prepare students for rewarding careers in biological sciences, physical sciences, earth sciences, mathematics and computer science, and the pre-college teaching of these subjects. The San José area is a world center of research laboratories and industries based on new scientific knowledge. The Bay Area and California need many new pre-college science and mathematics teachers to help prepare the needed technical workforce. Second, we provide the lower division core biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics courses for majors in other technical disciplines such as engineering. Third, we offer courses in mathematical concepts and in the physical universe and its life forms that satisfy the university's general education requirements. And fourth, we teach the discipline-specific courses for the science and mathematics teacher credential programs. Successful science students come from many backgrounds. Some enter the university immediately upon graduation from high school, but many come from the local industries, motivated by the desire to better understand the scientific foundations of their technical work and by the improved career opportunities available to individuals with a university education. The maturity, laboratory skills and experience of these students enrich our programs. Women and minorities are still underrepresented at the professional level in science; we have several programs to improve their access to science careers. There are active student clubs associated with each major. Several have won national recognition for their professional and community service activities.
