Theatre arts majors study the long history and variety of theatrical performance, learning about the performing arts in different media and diverse cultural contexts. Because theatre studies encompass critical analysis of texts, aesthetics, history, communication, economics, psychology, public relations, cultural studies, management, critical thinking, and collaboration. Theatre arts majors develop diverse skills necessary for success as thinking, creative, persuasive, productive members of a multicultural society. Our graduates pursue careers in a variety of fields where the skills and education of a Drama degree are highly prized.
The Theatre Arts program also prepares students for careers in the performance and production areas of theatre, including theatrical aspects of radio, television, film, and other media, educating the performers, directors, writers, producers, designers, technicians, teachers and managers who apply their academic knowledge and practical training to a variety of professional opportunities.
Our highly-regarded performance and production program provides students with a balanced academic and practical theatrical experience in a wide range of performance genres including plays, musical theatre, video, film, radio, storytelling and performance art projects.
Students benefit from the department's active affiliation with the professional community and can elect an industry internship in the senior year. These activities demonstrate to various sectors of the profession the value of our students' education while providing a transition between undergraduate and post-graduate experiences.
SJSU students, faculty and staff have produced significant achievements in the region as teachers, performers, community activists, entrepreneurs, consultants and arts administrators. As new performance technologies have emerged (and especially the computer-based technologies so important in the Silicon Valley), the Theatre Arts program has responded with education and training that keep our students and our program on the cutting edge, applying dramatic performance skills to television, radio, film, and computer-based media, preparing students to use their performance training as the "master communicators" so necessary to the information and service economies.
