SJSU is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. A student interested in the design field may graduate with a bachelor's degree in Art with a concentration in Design Studies, Studio Practice or a more specific Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic or Interior Design, or the Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Design. The BA Art with a concentration in Design Studies was created for students who wish a broad-based study of design. Students more interested in studio-based approaches may also receive a BA in Art in Studio Practice and minor in Industrial, Interior or Graphic Design. The design programs provide the student with an understanding of the aesthetic and technical skills needed to produce innovative design projects.
All Design students initially enroll in the BA in Art (Design Studies or Studio Practice)or the BS in Industrial Design degrees. Admission to the BFA degrees in Graphic or Interior Design is through a portfolio review when the student reaches upper division standing. Electronic media equipment is present in many fields and all students in the School are required to have laptop computers. See ad.sjsu.edu for the laptop computer requirements and other information about the School of Art and Design.

BS - Industrial Design
Lower division preparation
Industrial designers combine aesthetic sensitivity with technical knowledge. Through their skills, they relate products to people and make things functional, convenient and attractive. The industrial designer is concerned with the relationship between products and the people who use them. The designer works with engineers and other specialists to give form to products while improving their maintainability, safety and appearance.
The Industrial Design program includes core courses in industrial design, art, business, engineering, cybernetics and industrial technology. The faculty works closely with industry and the design professionals who advise the program regarding professional standards. Through its vital link to industry, the internship program provides students with field experience in consulting offices and corporate design departments. All of the members of the design faculty are working or have worked as professional designers. Their diverse experience and varied design philosophies strengthen the Industrial Design program. Students pursuing the BSID degree must advance through annual portfolio reviews.
