San José State University is one of five campuses in the California State University system and one of the few colleges or universities in Northern California to offer a dance major. SJSU is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Dance. The curriculum includes:
The program draws on the best of classical, contemporary and experimental traditions to provide excellent training. A close working relationship with music and drama complements the program, allowing students the opportunity for various performing experiences. Distinguished guest artists choreograph, perform and teach master classes.
Ample performance opportunities exist through two student companies (one contemporary and the other jazz and musical theatre), which perform extensively both locally and on tour. Repertory consists of works by significant choreographers and includes reconstructions of master works from the Labanotated scores by Doris Humphrey, Lucas Hoving, and Hanya Holm. Other choreographies have included the work of José Limon, Brenda Way, and Fred Strickler. In addition, student choreographed work is fully produced yearly in our studio theatre and each month there is an informal studio showing of student works in progress.
SJSU is a resident site of the Limon Dance Company of New York City, offering special dance workshops, guest teachers and choreographers for the dance program.
Many theatres are located in the area offering additional opportunities for dancers and choreographers.
