Creative Writing

The Creative Writing minor is an academic program for the student seriously interested in developing his or her art. It consists of fifteen units of study in workshop courses and three units of study in a reading course. The English department offers courses in writing poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction as well as specialized courses such as writing for youth.

The Creative Writing faculty consists of practicing fiction and creative nonfiction writers and poets who have received national recognition for both their creative, critical and editorial work. One semester each year, the department faculty includes a distinguished writer as holder of the Lurie Chair. Additionally, through the Center for Literary Arts, the English department cosponsors visits by major authors such as Toni Morrison, Edward Albee, Adrienne Rich and Arthur Miller.

Each year, through generous bequests in the names of Bonita Cox, Anne Lillis, Majorie Folendorf, Lois King Thore and Senator James Phelan, the English department awards several thousand dollars in prizes across ten categories of creative writing.
