Students interested in the world of business realize advantages and opportunities when they major in Business Administration at San José State University. Most dynamic business firms are guided and energized by a statement of mission. Similarly, the College of Business at SJSU pursues vigorously our mission: to be the institution of opportunity, providing innovative business education and applied research for the Silicon Valley region.
Students enjoy the opportunity of studying in a university that combines elements of a long heritage with the excitement of building for the future. Part of the heritage is SJSU's legacy as the oldest public institution of higher education West of the Mississippi, dating to 1857. The College of Business traces its origin to 1929. Since then, over 30,000 students have graduated with the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) degree and/or graduate degrees such as the MBA, MS Tax, or MS Accountancy.
Because most of our graduates remain in Silicon Valley, the approximately 1600 business students we graduate each year find that they are in good company in organizations throughout the region. SJSU, for example, has more business graduates working in Silicon Valley firms than any other university. This heritage of an extensive alumni network provides a resource that helps many students with career guidance and employment leads.
The College of Business' strategic plan provides a framework to assure that we stay on the forefront of business education. The College has identified three "niches" that enable us to best meet the needs of the Silicon Valley business community: global enterprise management, entrepreneurship and intrapraneurship and high technology management. Entrepreneurship is the launching of an enterprise, high tech management is the process of nurturing and growing it and globalization is the final level of expansion. These three stages apply to the vast majority of businesses, and/or their aspirations, in the Silicon Valley.
These are focal points for our programs and courses, and those that do not directly cover a niche area consider those areas where they are relevant. In addition to the niches, other themes are taken into account throughout our programs: excellent written and oral communication, competent analytical and reasoning skills, a knowledge of electronic commerce and the ability to work as a member of a team. We also expect our delivery systems to reflect the reality of tomorrow, with a growing proportion of our courses taking advantage of "e-learning."
Our approach to business education adds tremendous value to the discipline-based courses, which are continuously being revised and kept up-to-date to provide students a set of essential business competencies.
