Journalism

The School of Journalism and Mass Communications offers a comprehensive journalism program, providing a strong foundation in academic coursework and the opportunity for practical experience. Coursework in applied journalism is complemented by courses in the liberal arts, as the mark of an accomplished journalist is breadth and depth of interests, as well as knowledge and experience. The department is accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. Journalism majors specialize in one of four areas of mass media: Reporting and Editing, Magazine Writing, Radio/Television News and Photojournalism. In addition to both theoretical and applied classroom experience, all journalism students gain practical experience by serving a 240-hour internship on the staff of a newspaper, magazine, television station, or radio station.

The BS in Journalism with an emphasis in Reporting and Editing emphasizes the skills needed to reconstruct and interpret news events accurately and distinctly for the mass media, particularly newspapers and magazines. Reporting and Editing majors staff the award-winning Spartan Daily, the campus daily newspaper, which covers the university, community, state and national events that affect students.

The BS in Journalism with an emphasis in Magazine Writing and Production utilizes Access, a student produced magazine, as the showcase for developing writing and production skills.

The BS in Journalism with an emphasis in Radio/Television News includes the nature of broadcasting news, laboratory experience in radio and television, exposure to the standard news sources of San José's metropolitan community, technical production, and an understanding of the role of advertising, entertainment, politics and public opinion. Exceptional facilities give students advanced production experience: video cameras, a television studio with full production capabilities, and a radio-television news center. Students produce a weekly 30-minute news show for airing on a local television station, KTEH Channel 54, and news programs for the campus radio station KSJS FM 90.5.

The BS in Journalism with an emphasis in Photojournalism applies journalistic principles to photography: the photojournalism student shoots news feature stories, picture stories, photo essays, portfolio assignments, action photography, special photo techniques, the creation of photographic ideas, portraiture, sports, advertising, glamour, and fashion. The well-equipped facilities available to photojournalism students include film scanners and computers, a studio with special lighting, and photographic equipment available for loan.
