The department of Health Science offers an exciting mix of undergraduate majors and minors: Bachelor of Science in Health Science with concentrations in Community Health Education and Health Care Management, and minors in Health Science and Gerontology. A certificate in Gerontology is also available. The department also offers a Master's in Public Health degree with an emphasis in Community Health Education. The mission of Health Science is to educate students in the principles and skills of public and community health, emphasizing relationships between health, disease and behavior at the individual, institutional and community levels. The undergraduate curriculum supports the university's mission by educating students for entry-level careers in the areas of health education and health care administration. In addition to specialized content areas, the core curriculum includes courses which emphasize cultural, behavioral, developmental, ethical, organizational and health perspectives that provide students with an understanding of prevention, health promotion and health care management. The Health Science faculty is committed to its students and their professional development. Assignments, field experiences and service have a global orientation, link communications and technology, embrace diversity and complexity, address ethics and building healthy communities and contribute to eliminating health disparities. Courses involve students in critical thinking, discussion, teamwork, community projects and service learning.
In addition to declared majors and minors, many students enroll in Health Science courses out of personal interest or to fulfill General Education requirements. Health Science electives include Men's Health, Women's Health, Global Health, Health and the Internet, and Health and Social Marketing.
