San José State University is the only public university on the West Coast offering a Bachelor of Science degree in advertising, and one of only five in the region with a nationally accredited program in this field.
The curriculum provides a comprehensive approach to career preparation in advertising, with emphasis on both theory and practice. In addition to General Education, the first two years of the program include an orientation to mass communications and an introduction to the principles of advertising. The professional advertising core courses and specialized electives are taken in the junior and senior years. Further academic support is given the advertising major through a broad range of required and elective courses in liberal arts and business and through a required academic focus or minor in an outside subject. Students may specialize in either a creative or management track.
All majors undertake a 240-hour internship with an advertising agency, corporation, radio or TV station, newspaper, magazine, or retail firm. In the senior-level capstone course, Advertising Campaigns, students prepare advertising campaigns for actual clients. Student teams from this course have been consistent winners in the regional and national student campaigns competitions sponsored by the American Advertising Federation.
The program is accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications.
