Fall 2010 Impaction FAQs-Transfers Only

I am currently taking some of the prerequisites required for engineering at community college. Does this mean I cannot apply?

If you meet all of the other minimum requirements for transfer admission, you are encouraged to apply. Admission will be based on the qualifications of the pool of applicants to your desired engineering major. It is possible that you may be admitted. However, if you are not admitted, you may be offered space in the undeclared major.

Can I apply as an undeclared major as a transfer?

No, you may not. By the time a student reaches upper division (junior) standing, you must select a major.

The supplemental course criteria for this major are not offered at my current school, what do I do?

SJSU will adjust the criteria only in those cases where the required course work is not available. You will not be penalized in this instance and you are encouraged to apply.

I have about 50 units at University of Colorado at Boulder and want to transfer to your Business program: what do I need to do?

First, you will need to meet the basic CSU requirements for upper division transfer by the end of the Spring 2010 term. This includes 60 transferable semester units (90 quarter units) and completion of the four basic skills in written communication, oral communication, critical thinking and quantitative reasoning. See your local community college or http://transfer.sjsu.edu for approved courses.

You will need to apply by the November 30 deadline for Fall 2010 admission.

You will likely be considered a non-local applicant and will compete for selection into any of our business majors.

I am transferring with 30 transferable units from City College of SF and 30 transferable units from De Anza. Am I local or non-local?

It’s a tie! In this case, since it is an exact tie you will be considered a local applicant.

I am a former SJSU student who attended three years ago and then I transferred to UC Merced, where I have earned 60 transferable units, but now I want to come to SJSU to finish my degree. Is this possible?

It is possible, but your admission back to SJSU is not guaranteed. Since we are now an impacted campus, you will meet the new criteria and are subject to any of the new limitations on enrollment. Former SJSU students are not exempt from the new standards.

I am a veteran with course work from all over California. Am I considered a local or non- local?

You will be considered local if the majority of the units you have earned are from a Santa Clara or Santa Cruz County college. If not, you will be considered a non-local applicant.

I am an International student and I participated in a technical training program two years ago and now I want to come to San José State to get my bachelor’s degree. Can I apply as a freshman?

If your technical training is from a school that is not accredited or recognized by SJSU, you may apply as a freshman. However, after admission, if we discover that you have transferable credits from another institution, SJSU has the right to rescind your admission. It’s best to contact our international evaluations team at internationalqueries@sjsu.edu

My husband was in the military; therefore, I completed three years at an out-of-state university. Now, my husband is stationed in the Bay Area and I am currently attending De Anza College. There is no way that I will be able to earn more units here in Santa Clara County. Will I ever have an opportunity to attend SJSU if I am a Public Relations major? I can only attend and afford SJSU.

Certainly, anyone from any location can apply for admission to any undergraduate major. Though we cannot guarantee non-local applicants space in our programs, we take appeals for exceptions from military dependents. In your case, contact admissions@sjsu.edu and provide us with evidence that you are a military dependent.

If I am General Engineering major can I complete the physics sequence at SJSU?

If you are a transfer student, we expect you to have completed the equivalent to two college physics courses (Physics 50 and Physics 70) by the time that you apply to SJSU. See http://transfer.sjsu.edu for course-to-course equivalents at California colleges.
