Community College students should meet with a counselor as soon as possible to determine the equivalent courses offered at that institution. Students should complete as many as possible of the lower division requirements listed below, prior to transfer.
Lower Division Course Requirements | Community College Course Equivalents
Undergraduate Advisement
| Students wishing to major in chemistry should confer with one of the department advisors when entering the university. Students' goals will determine whether they opt for the BS or BA degree, with possible specialization in biochemistry, materials or preparation for teaching. Students who transfer into these programs should be aware that general chemistry and a number of supporting courses, especially the mathematics and physics requirements, should be started during their first two years. If students transfer at the junior level without most of these courses completed, more than four semesters at SJSU may be required to complete the degree. | |||||||||||||||||
All chemistry majors must meet with their advisors every semester.
| This mandatory advising session is necessary to remove the advising hold preventing registration for the following semester. At least one semester prior to graduation, an approved major form must be signed by the advisor and submitted to the Chemistry Department Office. | |||||||||||||||||
Required Core: | |||||||||||||||||
| CHEM 1A and CHEM 1B General Chemistry | Chem 21 General Chemistry AND Chem 21L1 General Chemistry Lab for Chemistry 21 AND Chem 21L2 General Chemistry Lab for Chemistry 21 AND Chem 22 General Chemistry AND Chem 22L1 General Chemistry Lab for Chemistry 22 AND Chem 22L2 General Chemistry Lab for Chemistry 22 Equivalent only if Sequence is Complete | ||||||||||||||||

| CHEM 055 Quantitative Analysis | Chem 70 Quantitative Analysis (*) | ||||||||||||||||
| CHEM 112A, 112B and 113A Organic Chemistry & Lab | No Current Equivalent | ||||||||||||||||
| Note: Community college Chemistry courses articulated with SJSU's Chem 112A, 112B, and 113A will meet course content requirements for the major but will not receive upper division credit. | |||||||||||||||||
Supporting Courses Required:
| MATH 030 Calculus I | Math 65A Analytical Geometry & Calculus | ||||||||||||||||
| MATH 031 Calculus II | Math 65B Analytical Geometry & Calculus | ||||||||||||||||
| MATH 032 Calculus III | Math 75 Calculus III (*) | ||||||||||||||||
| MATH 133A Ordinary Differential Equations Community College Math courses articulated with SJSU's Math 133A will meet course content requirements for the major but will not receive upper division credit. | No Current Equivalent | ||||||||||||||||
PHYSICS: | |||||||||||||||||
| Note: Native students (students who start their university experience at San José State University) will need to take the following Physics series: PHYSICS 70, 71 and 72 (equivalent to PHYSICS 50, 51, 52, 53) at SJSU. All transfer students will be expected to have completed the course equivalents to the Physics series listed below. | |||||||||||||||||
| PHYS 050 General Physics/Mechanics | Phys 45 Physics for Scientists & Engineers I (*) | ||||||||||||||||
| PHYS 051 General Physics/Electricity and Magnetism | Phys 46 Physics for Scientists & Engineers II (*) | ||||||||||||||||
| PHYS 052 General Physics/Heat and Light | Phys 47 Physics for Scientists & Engineers III (*) | ||||||||||||||||
| PHYS 053 General Physics/Atomic Physics | No Current Equivalent | ||||||||||||||||
| Note: If there is no transfer equivalent to Physics 53 then the student will be expected to complete the Physics 53 course at San José State University. | |||||||||||||||||
| OR | |||||||||||||||||
| PHYS 070 Mechanics | No Current Equivalent | ||||||||||||||||

| MATE 025 Introduction to Materials | No Current Equivalent | ||||||||||||||||
Prerequisites: | |||||||||||||||||
| Courses prerequisite to all chemistry courses must be passed with a grade of "C" or better (C- not accepted). Exceptions may be made only with instructor consent if not explicitly stated in the course description. | |||||||||||||||||
All students must satisfy the following prerequisite (or equivalent) prior to registering for the WST and 100W courses at SJSU {Academic Senate policy S05-8}:
| ENGL 001B Composition 2 A "C" or better is required in English 1B (a "C-" is not acceptable). | No Current Equivalent | ||||||||||||||||
| or | |||||||||||||||||
| Second Semester English Composition Equivalent Course | ENGL 1B Advanced Composition and Critital Thinking | ||||||||||||||||
| A course articulated to SJSU's English 1B is recommended, however any course approved for the IGETC second semester composition area would be accepted to meet this requirement (a grade of "C" or better is required). | |||||||||||||||||
CAN Qualified Courses (*)
| The following Chaffey College courses are CAN qualified. | |||||||||||||||||
| |||||||||||||||||
| CAN System courses are acceptable "in lieu of" each other. | |||||||||||||||||
| CAN System courses are not necessarily "equivalent" or "identical" in content. | |||||||||||||||||
Lower Division General Education (39 semester or 58 quarter units) - some of the courses listed above may be approved for general education credit as well as major preparation at your institution. Please see your college counselor/advisor to review your general education in order to receive FULL OR PARTIAL CERTIFICATION PRIOR TO TRANSFER to San José State University. You may be required to take additional lower division general education courses if you do not provide SJSU WITH A FULL OR PARTIAL CERTIFICATION OF GENERAL EDUCATION upon transfer.
American Institutions Requirement (3-9 semester or 5-15 quarter units) - may be satisfied within the lower division general education requirements.
Physical Education Requirement (2 courses) - at least 2 different activities.
